This too shall pass; Cleanliness is next to godliness; God works in mysterious ways; and God helps those who help themselves, all are proverbs, clichés, and or expressions that have been passed down for generations but are not scriptural.
According to Merriam-Webster, where there’s a will, there’s a way is defined as someone who has the desire and determination to do something, he or she can find a method for accomplishing it. This sentiment has never been more true and appropriate than now. During this pandemic, we have had to be determined as well as creative in order to maintain our connections with family, friends, colleagues, and our community.
Throughout my time on the east coast, my mother has spent her summers with me and I would plan various activities during our time together. This became our special time to share church services, trips, concerts, plays, restaurants, shopping, and medical appointments. Once travel restrictions were put in place, I began to worry about how we would be able to continue our summer tradition. My family discussed various options but decided it would be better for her to do a road trip. To be honest, I was very nervous about this option because of her age, medical issues, and the length of the drive. Although the Bible tells us in Philippians 4:6-7, Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Although we may understand this biblical principle, it is very hard to do when it is personal.
After several discussions with Retired Sergeant Larry Aldridge, my cousin/big brother, he said, “Don’t worry, where there’s a will, there’s a way! I am retired now!” Not only is he retired military, but he is also retired from teaching ROTC at the high school level after over 15 years of faithful service and support to our students. He developed a plan to drive her and take periodic stretch breaks, as well as regular stops for food and gas. He also factored in an overnight hotel stay if needed.
Over the years, Sgt. Aldridge has become a force to be reckoned with! However, that does not go without saying how loving, generous, supportive, and dedicated he is to our family and to those he loves and cares about. He is also an excellent listener, grill master and cook! Thank you Larry for having a will, and always making a way for our family and for this Remarkable time with my mother!
We love you! Happy Retirement!
