The landmark case of Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), was a groundbreaking decision of the U.S. Supreme Court (Court). In 1973, the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States generally protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose the right decision for her. Fast forward to Friday, June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that decision! In my humble opinion, that decision was about our basic Constitutional right to privacy. That basic right has now been dismantled, What’s Next? Justice Clarence Thomas, the longest-serving justice on the Court, gave us a glimpse when he wrote “the high court should "reconsider" other rulings, including landmark decisions that granted a right to contraception and same-sex marriage.” (Supreme Court, June 24, 2022)
Let’s use this moment in history as a galvanizing force to unite us to act! I know many of you may be saying, “this is not my issue”; however, because this is an assault on our freedom to choose, other freedoms will be dismantled. We must protect our rights for future generations! We must get actively involved in the political process at the local, state, and national levels. We must also hold our elected officials accountable once they are in office. Activism is essential for implementing change!
During times like these, we must trust God and know that He is the Source of our freedom. Yes, He gave us the right to choose. According to Joshua 24:15, But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Galatians 5:1, Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. I Corinthians 14:33, For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
Choose Christ, your ultimate Source of freedom! He is a forgiving God. Once you have made this decision, we have Him to fight our battles, and a community of believers to support implementing the policy changes to safeguard our freedom. Now you are armed and ready to handle the What’s Next, in your life!
Continue to study the book of Psalm. We really need those scriptures now!
