The Purpose & Power of Prayer

Oh, what peace we often forfeit

Oh, what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer.

This timeless classic, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, was composed as a poem in 1855 by Joseph M. Scriven and later as a hymnal and released by a countless number of artists from Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Ike & Tina Turner, to Amy Grant. In 2020, the words of this enduring hymnal still holds true. To clarify, prayer is a conversation with God. It is an essential part of our faith and should be an active ongoing part of our lives. Our prayers give us a connection to God and provide a solid foundation for managing the issues that will come up in our life.

During this blog, I will highlight two Remarkable Experiences! The first one was a prayer event coordinated by Awaken DC (for more information, visit www.awakendc.com). This prayer service started on Monday, April 27, 2020 through May 4, 2020. My church was a part of the prayer service on Monday, April 27 and I was honored to be a part of this great move of God. What a blessing it was to share with other believers from around the region that brought together various denominations to unite in prayer around the following three themes: to end a crisis, to heal a people and to awaken a city. Because we know that prayer changes things and that we need a social, political and spiritual change in our country, it is imperative that we rekindle our call to prayer now.

During this pandemic, we have heard repeatedly the words of II Chronicles 7:14, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and forgive their sin, and will heal their land. My next Remarkable Experience occurred on Sunday, May 17, 2020, I was able to share virtually in the Women’s Day service at Fountain of Faith Missionary Baptist Church (www.fofmbc.org). My dear friend Rev. MiMi Robinson shared a powerful message using this passage of scripture entitled -- Stop, Drop and Roll! Her message outlined the active role that we must play as believers. Our prayers to God must be a priority and cause us to change and pursue a lifestyle that is pleasing to Him.

We all can pray and must make it an essential part of our lives. If you need to recommit to a stronger prayer life, you can start today. If you find yourself worrying about everything that is going on in our country and in your home, join me in prayer and praise to God, because we have a friend in Jesus who has the power to change all!
