As of today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that the United States COVID-19 cases and deaths by state is 243,580 (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker. This number represents love, family, and grief around the country. Our prayers are with each family impacted by this sobering statistic. We are all impacted by how we must now co-exist with the virus. It has changed so much about our daily lives. Although I have experienced several deaths, none have been COVID related but COVID has drastically changed how we grieve, celebrate major milestones in our lives, and live daily. One major change is how we travel.
Please consider carefully if and when you will travel. If you must travel, I would like to share several tips or lessons learned from my experience. My most recent travels were due to deaths in my family. I really believe that it is not good for man (ReShone) to be alone (to grieve) but connections are good for the soul. That ‘s the main reason why I traveled. However, I admonish you to operate in wisdom at all times and to seriously consider why you are traveling during the pandemic.
If you must travel, please consider the following:
· Organize your trip (whether driving or flying);
· When possible, secure a non-stop flight;
· When flying, if possible, secure a window seat to minimize contact with others;
· Check the policy of your airline during the pandemic;
· Check the weather before departing;
· Pack essentials (masks, face shield, hand sanitizer, and latex gloves);
· Prepare healthy snacks to minimize encounters and interactions (some restaurants may not be opened within the airport; therefore, long lines may result for those that are opened);
· Reframe from hugging and other personal contacts upon arrival;
· Avoid large crowds (spread out within the home, grave site, or restaurant);
· Use your mask inside the home other than when eating; and
· Follow the rules for that area.
On one of my trips, just when I thought I was completely prepared and made it to my seat aboard the airline, someone asked, “Is the aisle seat available?” I responded, “Yes.” She went into her bag and pulled out a fitted sheet to cover her seat! I had never considered this. I wasn’t sure if I should cry or laugh! I decided to laugh and just trust God. We must remember the words found in Psalm 34:7-9, The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his Holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.
Use Wisdom during this season!
