It’s Personal! A Salute to Black History Month

Throughout this global pandemic, we have been asking, “Are you ok?” This is a simple but profound question. Yet, I want each of you to not only ask the question, but please wait to allow the person time to respond. The theme for this year’s Black History Month is Black Health and Wellness. Each year, a theme is developed for Black History Month by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). (BLACK HISTORY THEMES – ASALH – The Founders of Black History Month) This organization was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson on August 9, 1915, to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.

Friday, February 4 was National Wear Red Day or what the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., call it, Pink Goes Red! A national initiative to raise awareness for heart health. Heart health is critically important for women and has deadly consequences for African American women when not properly monitored. We must make managing our health a priority. We must also be intentional about self-care. We must routinely check our physical health and manage our emotional, spiritual, and financial wellness as well. I have learned that if I am out of balance in one of these areas, it throws everything off! Gentlemen, this information is also appropriate for you!

Start today by making your physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial health a personal priority! Initiate a daily plan to take small steps by meditating and praying for direction. According to Jeremiah 17:7, But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

Next, start moving. You can start walking in your neighborhood or in your home (especially if you have stairs). Drink plenty of water! Start meal prepping and get some sleep! If you have a hard time sleeping like me, it is imperative that you start by developing a routine for winding down before bedtime.

This is personal! As we celebrate Black History, which is American History, we stand on the shoulders of so many who fought, sacrificed, and died in order to pave the way for us. Let’s make it personal by recommitting to being our best selves! Your health, longevity, and quality of life are depended upon it.

Thank you for joining me on this journey to re-imagine contentment in 2022!

Always look for the Remarkable in your life!
