Consulting with the Potter: Developing Healthy Habits

Last week, I had a routine medical appointment that included completing lab work. I didn’t really think anything of the appointment at all. However, I drank water before the appointment because I have small roaming veins and I did some basic movements to help with locating my veins. Over the years, I have been given those tips to minimize the number of sticks during my appointment. A few days later, I was called by the doctor’s office with news that my A1C level was high and that my doctor wanted me to start medication. This was alarming because the higher your A1C level, the higher your risk for diabetic complications. I have all of the usual medical issues in my family on both sides. So, after a few moments, I responded to the nurse that I didn’t want to start medication as a first option but wanted to do a little research, meet with a nutritionist, change my diet, and increase my exercise routine.

After much prayer and several conversations with family and friends, it became painfully clear to me that I will need to make some major changes regarding my relationship with food! I have a sweet tooth and I really enjoy eating out, but after reading my Bible and doing some basic research, I decided to ask God to renew my mind and change my relationship with food. I will start reviewing labels and packages. I will start preparing meals with simple recipes. I will incorporate a routine schedule of exercise and will reject old and comfortable habits about food. It’s a journey!

Our blueprint for healthy living can be found in our Bible. According to III John 1:2, Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prosper. John 6:35, Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. James 2:17, In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
