As a child, I can remember sitting and watching “Roots” each Black History Month with my family. I was very fortunate to grow up in a multi-generational household. My grandfather shared stories about growing up in the segregated south. I was instilled with so much pride regarding our history because Black history is an intimate part of American History; especially during the month of February! This is a time to celebrate, remember, and renew our commitment to honoring our rich legacy of achievement, sacrifice, and loss. However, Black History has increasingly become under attack. More and more, various politicians have initiated a movement to remove and or dilute the history books. We can’t allow this to happen! We must challenge this thinking and be ready to fight for those that have sacrificed so much for our freedom. We must never forget!
It is so insulting to have to debate or defend our history and its place in our history books. The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 32:7, Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you. Hosea 4:6, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Hebrews 12:1, Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
We know that we can’t allow Black History to be erased from the history books but let’s also continue the tradition of telling our story and passing those stories down to the next generation. Again, we must never forget and we can’t stand by and allow history to be rewritten to exclude our incredible contributions to society. As always, thank you for your love and continued support!
