Before I joined my book club or even Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., I witnessed the powerful bond of the Moore Girls who now have become seasoned seniors! My grandparents had six girls and five boys. Each Moore girl brought a unique flavor to the family dynamics. In honor of Women’s History Month, I salute them for their uncompromising love, sacrifice, dedication and support for our family.
No matter what issue the family may have faced, the Moore Girls pulled together to resolve it. None of the children ever went to babysitters, because one of the sisters would always be available. Each sister had spanking and punishment rights to correct the children at any time and in any place! Our homes were happy homes, filled with love, laughter, correction and sometimes tears, and of course meals, especially--Sunday dinners. Meals help to anchor the family and sisterhood. As in the Bible, spices play a major role in anointing and providing an offering unto the Lord and kings. For example, Mark 16:1, And when the sabbath was past Mary Magdalene, and Mary the (mother) of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint Him.
Within this bond of sisterhood, each remind me of spices that enhance our lives. My aunt Jimmie Lee was our anchor and she provided the main ingredient for any meal. My mom provides the much-needed Season All to pull everything together. My aunt Alice adds the Cayenne Pepper to give it pop. My aunt Dorothy offers the lemon pepper to keep it interesting. My aunt Willie Mae provided the Rosemary to make everything special and my aunt Lillie adds the Ground Cinnamon to give everything a sweet aroma.
Each sister has her own way to make you feel special. I am reminded in Romans 12:9-10, Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another. Did I see them arguing? Absolutely! Did I see them critical of each other when needed? Yes! If they missed the mark with a particular dish, they were told about it. But I always saw them love unconditionally and forgive quickly.
I think watching them started my love for movies and shows demonstrating girl power or sisterly support! Again, during this Annual Women’s History Month, I salute and honor the Moore Girls. I thank God for each of them and how they have played a pivotal role in caring for our family! Please take a moment to honor those powerful women who have made a difference in your life.
With Love,
Dr. ReShone
